Golden Eagles Soar Past Women's Soccer in Sibling Rivalry

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – In a non-conference women's soccer matchup between both campuses of St. Joseph's College, Long Island dealt Brooklyn a 5-0 defeat on Saturday afternoon at the SJC Outdoor Complex.

The Lady Bears (2-10) drop their second straight contest while the Golden Eagles (11-5-1) extend their unbeaten streak to three games and have posted shutouts in all 11 victories this season.

Playing shorthanded the entire contest, the Lady Bears struggled to find the offensive third and the Golden Eagles dominated the first 45 minutes of play maintaining a 24-0 shot advantage. The hosts drew first blood in the 11th minute on a Jennifer Martino strike firing a shot from inside the box into the upper right corner.

Midway through the period, the Golden Eagles tallied a pair of goals in a span of six minutes, Heather Nolan and Katelyn Chiasera finding the back of the net in the 23rd and 29th minutes. Just outside of five minutes remaining before the intermission, a Lauren Heschi goal gave Long Island a 4-0 lead at halftime.

The second half of play found some scoring opportunities for Brooklyn with Pamela Chernyakhovsky (Brooklyn, N.Y./Leon M. Goldstein) firing the lone three Lady Bears shots, two coming on net forcing a pair of Katie McGarrell saves and the Lady Bears held the Golden Eagles to just five shots in the period, with Nolan heading the only goal of the half in the 58th minute.

Nicole Farinella (East Patchogue, NY/Bellport HS) made 12 saves in defeat while McGarrell and Votta played an equal 45 minutes in net for the combined shutout.

The Lady Bears return to action on Tuesday, October 22nd in a crucial Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup against Berkeley College, a rematch of last year's championship game. A win in their conference finale will clinch a spot in the HVIAC Tournament, while a loss will dash the Lady Bears hopes for defending their league title. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at the Aviator Sports Complex and will open a doubleheader with the men following at 8 p.m.
