Fahy Breaks Goal and Point Marks as Women's Soccer Defeats John Jay

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Sophomore Shannon Fahy (Breezy Point, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) had a record-setting night scoring two goals as the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's soccer finished off their 2013 home slate and celebrated senior night with a 2-0 triumph over John Jay College on Wednesday night at the Aviator Sports Complex.

Fahy now has 13 goals on the year with her second goal breaking the single-season record of 12 set by senior Cynthia Gambino (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) a year ago. The sophomore also broke the single-season points record of 28 set by sophomore Pamela Chernyakhovsky (Brooklyn, N.Y./Leon M. Goldstein) last year with the four points and now has 32 points on the year.

St. Joseph's (4-11) has now won two out of their last three games while John Jay (4-14) has now lost two games in a row and were shutout for the 13th time this season.

The teams began the game feeling each other out as the first shot of the game didn't come until the 6th minute when Lady Bears senior goalkeeper Nicole Farinella (East Patchogue, N.Y./Bellport HS) made the first of five saves. Both teams had limited scoring chances throughout most of the first half with the shot totals tied at 4-4 for the opening period.

Fahy would end the scoreless tie in the 42nd minute when she took a throughball from Gambino from just outside the box and fired it past John Jay goalkeeper Katelyn Davis to put St. Joseph's up 1-0 heading into the intermission.

The second half saw the Bloodhounds come out with more of a sense of urgency as they controlled the ball in the Lady Bears half of the field but were unable to capitalize off three corner kicks and three shots in the first ten minutes.

St. Joseph's added an insurance goal in the 58th when Fahy took a cross from senior Christina Abbate (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) and put a ball that the John Jay goalkeeper misplayed into the back of the net to give the Lady Bears a 2-0 lead.

The Bloodhounds would try to get back into the game but the St. Joseph's backline proved to be difficult to overcome as the Lady Bears took every offensive punch from John Jay but the Bloodhounds were unable to get on the board despite having seven corner kicks in the second half and holding a 6-3 shot advantage during the half.

Fahy led the Lady Bears with three shots on goal while Chernyakhovsky contributed three shots. Abbate recorded her second assist of the year while Gambino notches her first. Farinella picked up her third shutout of the season for her fourth win in net.

Pacing John Jay was Jessica Jean who had a team-high three shots on goal. Davis made two saves in picking up the loss.

St. Joseph's concludes their 2013 campaign on Friday, November 1st playing NYU-Poly at the Aviator Sports Complex with a start time of 7 p.m.
