Women's Soccer Stays Hot, Shuts Out York (N.Y.) 4-0

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's soccer team put forth a dominant effort on both ends of the field as they blanked York College (N.Y.), 4-0, on Thursday night at the Aviator Sports and Events Center.

The Lady Bears (5-1) continue their best start of their three-year history with the win. Freshman Cansu Usta (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fort Hamilton) added to her point total with an assist and her 14th goal of the season, now tying her for second in all of Division III. Junior Pamela Chernyakhovsky (Brooklyn, N.Y./Leon M. Goldstein) and Jenny Sanchez (Los Angeles, Calif.) both added goals in the winning effort.

Sanchez opened the scoring in the 9th minute, her first goal with the Lady Bears, on an assist from Usta. In the 41st minute, Usta scored on a breakaway following a steal to put the St. Joseph's up two at the half.

In the second half, Chernyakhovsky sent a long shot in past the goalie's hands at the 51st minute to extend the lead to three. A York own goal in the 68th minute capped off the game's scoring.

St. Joseph's played an aggressive game on offense, outshooting York 28-1 for the match and the Lady Bears back line held the Cardinals to just one shot on goal for the entire match posting their third shutout of the season. The Lady Bears also won the corner kicks advantage at 7-2.

Goalie Kiara Libreros had 13 saves for the Cardinals (1-6) in a losing effort.

The Lady Bears will look to continue their winning ways on Sunday, September 28th when they open Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play against defending champion Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. The men will lead off the doubleheader at Aviator Field against the Panthers at 1 p.m. with the women following at 3 p.m. Live stats will be available on SJCBears.com.
