Women's Soccer Roars Past Medgar Evers in Awareness Game

BROOKLYN, N.Y.—In a heavily one-sided affair, the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's soccer team downed Medgar Evers College, 15-0, on Wednesday night at the Aviator Sports and Events Center.

St. Joseph's (9-3) entered Wednesday as winners in three of their last four, but dropped their previous match to conference rival King's College (N.Y.). With the season winding down, the determined Lady Bears sought to get back into the win column against a struggling Cougars (0-11) squad that was seeking their first win of the season.

They did just that, scoring early and often, including eight goals before the first intermission.

Freshman Cansu Usta (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fort Hamilton) put St. Joseph's on the board early, scoring in the 7th minute off of an assist from Pamela Chernyakhovsky (Brooklyn, N.Y./Leon M. Goldstein). Usta put away two more goals before the 45-minute mark, managing a first-half hat-trick. Not to be outdone, Shannon Fahy (Breezy Point, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) added four goals of her own in an explosive first half for the Lady Bears.

St. Joseph's didn't let the intermission slow them down, getting back on the board less than four minutes into the second half thanks to Usta's fourth goal of the contest. Usta would find the net twice more before the end of the night, completing her second six-goal performance of the season. She now comfortably sits atop the NCAA Division III women's soccer rankings in goals (30) and points (67).

Caruso scored her sixth of the season in the 82nd minute, assisted by Destiny Marino (Queens, N.Y./Christ the King), to capped off the 15-0 victory.

St. Joseph's jumped on Medgar Evers from the first whistle on Wednesday and consistently controlled the tempo throughout. The Cougars were outshot 29-2 as Nicole Farinella (East Patchogue, N.Y./Bellport) made two saves for her fifth shutout of the season.

Seven different Lady Bears scored goals en route to the victory. Daniela Semilia (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) tallied her sixth of the season and added two assists. Chernyakhovsky tacked on a goal and an assist. Jamilynn McGowan (Staten Island, N.Y./Petrides) scored her second of the season.

In addition to her four goals to boost her season total to 18, Fahy helped on three goals for an 11-point night, while Shannon Rom (Breezy Point, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) also contributed an assist.

St. Joseph's returns to the pitch on Sunday, October 19th in the second of their Stomach Cancer Awareness Games hosting Washington Adventist University in a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. at Aviator Field. The Lady Bears will also celebrate Senior Day honoring seniors Daniela Semilia, Nicole Farinella, Melissa Maloy, Shannon Rom and Kristin D'Chiutiis
