Women's Soccer Finishes at 11-5 Falling to Golden Eagles in Finale

PATCHOGUE, N.Y.—The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's soccer team concluded their winningest season suffering a 6-1 setback to sister campus St. Joseph's College (Long Island) on Wednesday evening at Danzi Field.

The Lady Bears (11-5) produce their second winning season in three years reaching the 11-win mark while the Golden Eagles (7-11-2) set their sights on the upcoming Skyline Conference tournament this weekend entering as the No. 6 seed.

The Golden Eagles scored early and often, Kristin Carroll opening the scoring just 3:11 into the contest and Clare Brady and Jennifer Marino tacking on two more goals before the six-minute mark to jump ahead 3-0.

The hosts controlled play throughout the opening 45 minutes, holding a 5-0 lead at the intermission, outshooting the Lady Bears 15-2 in the half.

St. Joseph's (Long Island) moved ahead 6-0 on a Cassandra Costarelli goal in the 69th minute and the Golden Eagles appeared to notch a shutout on their senior day until junior Pamela Chernyakhovsky (Brooklyn, N.Y./Leon M. Goldstein) fired a high lob from distance scoring just two seconds before the final whistle to spoil the clean sheet.

Six different Golden Eagles combined to score a goal each and maintained a 20-7 shooting advantage for the contest.

Senior Nicole Farinella (East Patchogue, N.Y./Bellport HS) had a busy night in net, making 10 saves in defeat in her final collegiate game. Fellow senior Daniela Semilia (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) led the attack with four shots and senior Shannon Rom (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) also tallied a shot on goal from her back position.

Freshman Cansu Usta (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fort Hamilton) managed one shot on frame and finished her rookie campaign with an NCAA-leading 36 goals and 79 points. Her 2.25 goals per game would also break an NCAA single-season record that has stood since 1989, but she will have to wait until the conclusion of the NCAA championship before statistics are verified and finalized before statistical champions are crowned.

After completing their first 10-win season in their three-year history, the Lady Bears and all 13 varsity teams of the Brooklyn campus will join the Long Island campus as members of the Skyline Conference beginning in the 2014-15 season.
