Molic’s Game-Winner Leads Women’s Soccer Over Purchase in Skyline Opener

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Second half goals from sophomores Anisah Molic (Staten Island, N.Y./Susan E. Wagner) and Deserae Sequeira (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson) lifted the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's soccer team (4-4, 1-1 Skyline) to a 2-1 win over Purchase State College in the Skyline opener on Saturday night.

How It Happened
St. Joseph's outshot Purchase 4-1 in the first 30 minutes of play as neither team could find their offensive footing early on. However, in the 33rd minute, a Panther corner kick resulted in a clamor for the ball in the box and a ricochet off of a Bear gave the visitors' a 1-0 lead. Despite being down 1-0 on the own goal, SJC led in shots (6-1) and corners (4-2) at the half as their offense was threatening early.

The Bears didn't trail for long as Sequeira received a throw-in from Lisa Loschiavo (Malverne, N.Y./Valley Stream North) near the baseline left of the goal and hooked a shot into the right corner of the net to tie things up at one (57'). Neither side could find an advantage until the 78th minute when another Loschiavo throw-in led Molic perfectly into a one-on-one in which she chipped the ball over the keeper's head for the game winner. The goal also secured the Bears' first come from behind win since a 5-2 victory over Washington Adventist on October 19, 2012.

For the Bears

  • Molic and Sequeira each attempted three goals and had two shots on goal apiece.
  • Loschiavo assisted on both of St. Joseph's goals in the game.
  • Rookie Julia Lavelle (Bayside, N.Y./Mary Louise Academy) led the Bears in shots with five (3 on goal) while Rachel Rocha (Linden, N.J./Linden) fired two of her own.
  • Goalkeeper Reem Shaban (Brooklyn, N.Y./New Utrecht) saved two of the three shots she saw in her fourth win of the season.
