Four Bears Score as Women’s Soccer Edges Brooklyn on the Road

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Following their first loss of the season last Wednesday, the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's soccer team (4-1) traveled to borough rival Brooklyn College (0-3-1) on Saturday afternoon and pulled out a 4-3 victory as four different Bears scored to secure their fourth win in the first five games of 2019.

How It Happened
Brooklyn's Rachel Gomez scored unassisted from the left side of the box just 54 seconds into the game to give the hosts an immediate 1-0 cushion. The score held at 1-0 until the 27th minute when junior Anisah Molic (Staten Island, N.Y./Susan E. Wagner) gathered a loose ball at the top of the box and fired a shot into the back of the net to tie things at one.

The Bears' offense found their stride after that as captain Deserae Sequeira (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson) passed to sophomore Julia Lavelle (Bayside, N.Y./Mary Louis Academy) who scored from five yards out for a 2-1 SJC lead. St. Joseph's kept that 2-1 edge entering intermission outshooting the Bulldogs 12-5 in the first 45 minutes.

SJC added an insurance goal in the 55th minute after sophomore Christina DiBartolo (Middle Village, N.Y./Forest Hills) sent a pass from the backfield that found rookie Clara Curtiss (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) who scored from the top of the box giving the Bears a 3-1 lead.
Brooklyn's Noemi Vasquez found the back of the net five minutes later off a corner kick from Anna Curran that cut the Bears' advantage to one (3-2).

The scoreboard read 3-2 until the 82nd minute when St. Joseph's scored on a corner kick of their own as Sequeira dished to freshman Hailey Fahrmann (New Brighton, Minn./Irondale) who tallied SJC's fourth goal of the game. The Bulldogs went in to score off a rebound in the 90th minute to come within one, but the comeback ended there as SJC picked up their first win over Brooklyn in five meetings.

For the Bears

  • Sequeira had her first multi-assist outing of the season, but her goal-scoring streak was halted at four games despite attempting 10 shots.
  • Fahrmann's tally was the third of her career and the late BC goal made it her first collegiate game-winner.
  • Sophomore keeper Reem Shaban (Brooklyn, N.Y./New Utrecht) came in to patrol the net in the second half and saved six of the eight shots she saw on goal.
