Sequeira Scores Twice but Manhattanville Upends Women’s Soccer

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Junior Deserae Sequeira (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson) netted both of the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's soccer team's (6-5, 1-3) goals in a 6-2 home loss to Skyline unbeaten Manhattanville College (6-5, 4-0) on Saturday at Aviator Field.

The two scores pushed Sequeira's season total to 19, which currently tops all of Division III.

How It Happened
Samira Davis headed a feed from Ashley Hayes into the back of the net in the ninth minute to open the game's scoring as the Valiants took an early 1-0 lead. They doubled their lead 20 minutes later off the foot of Natalie Aracena, but Sequeira followed with a direct free kick lofted over the keeper's outstretched hands cutting SJC's deficit to one (39').

Sequeira's snipe was the Bears' only shot attempt of the half while Manhattanville fired 11 of their own tacking on another before halftime for a 3-1 advantage.

The Valiants put in two early tallies to open the second half for a commanding 5-1 lead in the 51st minute. Sequeira chipped away at the deficit just three minutes later dribbling up to the net on the right and going high short side over the goalie for her 19th of 2019.

However, Aracena nabbed a brace just seconds later and the visitors held SJC scoreless for the rest of the day to stay undefeated in their first year in the Skyline.

For the Bears

  • All four of Sequeira's shots were on goal leading to her two tallies.
  • Classmate Anisah Molic (Staten Island, N.Y./Susan E. Wagner) took the Bears' only two other shots on the day.
  • Reem Shaban (Brooklyn, N.Y./New Utrecht) and Lauren Quesada (Westbury, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) each allowed three goals and combined for 11 saves in the loss.
