Outstanding Usta! St. Joseph's Soccer Star Garners National Recognition

NCAA Leading Scorer Cansu Usta recognized in Sports Illustrated and Newsweek

Tiny St. Joe’s of Clinton Hill has a star in the making, and the national media is taking note!

As reported by St. Joseph New York Athletics, Brooklyn freshman Cansu Usta was recently featured in both Sports Illustrated and Newsweek for her outstanding athletic accomplishments playing for Lady Bear’s soccer.

Recognizing her outstanding rookie campaign that sees her sitting atop the NCAA leaderboard in goal scoring and points, Usta has been showcased in the November 3 Sports Illustrated‘s Faces in the Crowd section on page 24 and in a Newsweek feature published online on Thursday, October 30th.

“On behalf of the entire College community, I commend Cansu on her extraordinary accomplishments on the soccer field,” stated Dr. Jack P. Calareso, president, St. Joseph’s College.

Usta’s multiple media call-outs mark the first time a St. Joseph’s Brooklyn student-athlete has been featured in either national publication.

Through games played Sunday, Usta leads the NCAA in all divisions—both men and women—with 36 goals and 79 points. The forward tallied a goal in 11 of 16 games, recording hat tricks in six games while helping Lady Bear’s soccer, in it’s third year of existence, to a program-best 11-5 mark.

St. Joseph Brooklyn finished third in the Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (HVIAC) regular season and was beaten 5-0 by King’s College last Wednesday in the first round of the 2014 HVIAC Women’s Soccer Tournament.

With the Lady Bears season now over Usta will have to wait to see if she is crowned the 2014 NCAA statistical champion. She currently has a four-goal lead in total goals and two-point lead in total points, both over junior forward Olivia Huber of St. Thomas More.
