Women's Swimming Falls to St. Joseph's (Long Island) in Road Meet

PATCHOGUE, N.Y.—The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's swimming team returned to the pool after nearly a one-month break, but couldn't upend their sibling campus rivals St. Joseph's College (Long Island) falling 131-66 on Saturday afternoon at the Danzi Natatorium.

The Lady Bears (1-1) jumped out to an early lead winning the opening 200-yard medley relay as Julia Dineen (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Saviour), Erin Collins (Breezy Point, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall), Tina Wong (Brooklyn, N.Y./HS of Telecommunications Art and Technology) and Victoria Benalcazar (Astoria, N.Y./St. John's Prep) teamed up for a .58 second victory.

But the Golden Eagles (5-3) stormed back winning the next six events before Dineen edged out Gabriella Cannon by less than half a second to win the 100-yard backstroke—the Lady Bears' lone individual win—but the victory was not enough to close the deficit.

Jillian O'Hara (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) swam a season-best time of 2:48.80–just two seconds off her personal best–in the 200-yard individual medley to capture second place points for the Lady Bears.

Wong grabbed second place in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:18.19–just short of her personal best–while Brianna Minogue (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) also secured second place points with a time of 1:07.67 in the 100-yard freestyle.

Jennifer Moncino (Ridgewood, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) set a new personal-best swimming a 1:47.63 in the 100-yard backstroke.

The Lady Bears have another nearly three-week layoff before returning to the pool in the new year facing John Jay College on the road on Friday, January 9, 2015 at 6 p.m.
