NEW YORK — Senior Morgan Summers (Bellerose, N.Y./St. Mary's) broke the 1000-yard freestyle record by over a minute as the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's swimming team captured six events to claim a 55-40 non-conference victory over John Jay College in their final meet of the calendar year on Monday evening.

  • Date: Monday, December 14, 2015

Summers Shatters 1000 Free Record

  • In only her first time swimming the event in her career, Morgan Summers lowered the Lady Bears 1000-yard freestyle record by 1:21.18 for a first-place finish touching the wall in 13:23.80. The senior later also took first in the 100-yard backstroke and anchored the winning 200 free relay squad.
  • The record is the 11th record to fall this season and Summers now has her name on five individual Lady Bears records (200 Free, 500 Free, 100 Back, 200 IM) and both record-setting relay squads.

Lady Bears Come From Behind

  • After dropping the opening 200-yard medley relay, SJC found themselves at a deficit but a first-place finish from Shannon Doherty in the 50-yard free style (28.85) and second place finishes from Brianna Minogue in the 200-yard free (2:36.76), Jillian O'Hara in the 200-yard IM (2:45.48) and Doherty in the 100-yard butterfly (1:18.67) kept the Lady Bears within reach, trailing 28-24 after six events.

Minogue & Wong Go 1-2

  • The Lady Bears took the lead for good when Brianna Minogue (1:08.37) and Tina Wong (1:10.14) took the top two spots in the 100-yard freestyle—the only 1-2 finish for either team—starting a string of 4-of-5 event wins to close out the dual meet.

O'Hara & Caiazzo Seal The Victory

  • With the Lady Bears still holding on to a five-point lead with two events to go, Jillian O'Hara's 15-second victory in the 100-yard breaststoke (1:28.51) and Jessica Caiazzo touching the wall in third (1:55.75) guaranteed the victory for St. Joseph's
  • With the meet already in hand, the quartet of Doherty, O'Hara, Minogue and Summers clocked in at 2:02.37 in the final 200-yard freestyle relay, winning by nearly five seconds for the final 55-40 differential.

Next Up for the Lady Bears

St. Joseph's has a month off from competition, returning to action on Friday, January 15 heading to Maritime College for their Skyline Conference finale. Meet time is set for 6 p.m.
