Doherty Lowers 50 Free Record as Women's Swimming in Sixth After Day One of Skyline Championships

THROGGS NECK, N.Y.—Competing in their first Skyline Conference Championships, the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's swimming team sits in sixth place after the first day of the two-day competition hosted by Maritime College.

Seniors Morgan Summers (Bellerose, N.Y./St. Mary's) and Jillian O'Hara (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) and freshman Shannon Doherty (Brooklyn, N.Y./Churchill) were the top point collectors for the Lady Bears, with the rookie lowering one of her SJC records.

How it Happened

  • The Lady Bears seized sixth place in the opening 200-yard medley relay with the quartet of Morgan Summers, Jillian O'Hara, Tina Wong and Shannon Doherty clocking in at 2:12.00, just a half second behind the program record.
  • Summers collected two top 10 finishes in the 1000-yard freestyle (13:28.51) and the 100-yard backstroke (1:09.99).
  • Doherty lowered her personal best in the 200-yard freestyle by nearly seven seconds finishing in 2:24.57, missing the program record by .05 seconds. Later in the meet, the freshman bettered her 50-yard freestyle record to 27.72—the 12th record to fall this season—collecting eighth-place points.
  • O'Hara also accumulated an eighth-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke touching the wall in 1:26.98.

Notables

  • Tina Wong (28.60), Jillian O'Hara (29.97), Brianna Minogue (31.07) and Lauren Rivera (38.44) all swam personal bests in the 50-yard freestyle. Wong's time earned 13th place, one spot out of scoring position.
  • Jessica Caiazzo shattered her personal best in the 100-yard breaststroke by almost 12 seconds finishing in 1:38;47.
