Three Lady Bears Record First Singles Wins in Triumph Over Lehman

BRONX, NY – In a match that was suspended for over a week due to rain, the St. Joseph's College women's tennis team completed a 6-3 non-conference victory over Lehman College on Sunday afternoon.

The match was originally scheduled for October 14th and when play was halted, St. Joseph's held a 3-1 advantage and led in two of the four remaining singles matches with another yet to begin.

Sophomore Kelly McNamee (Glendale, NY/Mary Louis) shutout her opponent at #2 singles with a 6-0, 6-0 win, her second of the season. After dropping her first set 6-0, junior Patricia Nealon (Maspeth, NY/St. Francis Prep) took the second set 6-3 and completed the comeback in the tiebreak, 10-7.

Freshman Aleena DeJesus (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney) and senior Caitlyn Kakavas (Bayside, NY/St. Agnes) recorded their first career singles victories, DeJesus victorious at #4 singles 6-4, 6-2 and Kakavas winning at #5 singles 6-1, 6-1.

Both squads completed another match afterwards with Lehman splitting the season series taking a 7-2 victory in the rematch. Lehman dominated the singles matches taking five of the six flights. Junior Danielle Marino (Maspeth, NY/Mary Louis) also recorded her first career singles victory, triumphant at #5 singles, 10-1.

St. Joseph's (3-5) returns to action on Tuesday, October 25th in a cross-borough matchup against Medgar Evers College starting at 5 p.m.
