Women's Tennis Blanked by St. Joseph's (L.I.) in Season Opener
PATCHOGUE, N.Y. - The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's tennis team dropped a 9-0 non-conference decision to sibling rivals, St. Joseph's College (Long Island) in their 2013 season opener at the SJC Outdoor Complex on Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Bears (0-1) were held to just one game by Golden Eagles (2-2) in the opening doubles matches but singles play proved to be more competitive as Deirdre Lavelle (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall) dropped her opening set at No. 4 singles by just a break before succumbing 6-4, 6-0. In her collegiate debut, freshman Samantha Rossi (Bayside, N.Y./Mary Louis) fell 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. Rossi and Lavelle teamed up at No. 2 doubles for the lone game in a 8-1 defeat.
The Lady Bears return to action on Monday, September 23rd in a non-conference road match against borough rivals Brooklyn College starting at 4:30 p.m.
