Women's Tennis Rolls in 7-2 Triumph Over Berkeley

FLUSHING, N.Y.—Junior Tathiana Pierre (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Ford) extended her winning streak to nine matches and led the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's tennis team to a 7-2 Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory on Thursday evening at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

With the win, the Lady Bears (3-6, 2-1 HVIAC) have won three of their last four and secured at least a third place finish in league play.

Pierre, Victoria LoBosco (Glendale, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy), Madeline Moravek (Whitestone, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) and Deirdre Lavelle (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall) each secured two points toward the victory.

St. Joseph's raced out to a 4-0 lead in singles play before the Knights won the last two matches of the session to cut the deficit to 4-2.

Moravek posted a 10-0 shutout at No. 5 singles to improve to 3-0 in league play, while LoBosco and Lavelle claimed convincing 10-1 and 10-2 triumphs at No. 3 and No. 6 singles, respectively.

Pierre extended her win streak to five matches and now boasts a conference-best 3-0 record at No. 1 singles in league play, winning 10-3 over Rhena Kaula.

The Lady Bears quickly sealed the victory when doubles play began as Moravek and Lavelle posted an 8-0 shutout at No. 3 doubles closely followed by Samantha Rossi (Bayside, N.Y./Mary Louis) and Mary Edward (Glendale, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) pitching a shutout of their own at No. 2 doubles.

Pierre teamed up with LoBosco and closed out the doubles sweep with an 8-3 triumph, the duo now with an HVIAC-leading 3-0 record in doubles.

The Lady Bears will return to action on Sunday, October 19 in their HVIAC finale against defending champion Pratt Institute. First serve against the Willoughby Avenue rivals is slated for 1 p.m. at the Pratt tennis courts.
