Trerotola Rallies To Remain Undefeated as Women’s Tennis Falls to Staten Island

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Senior Denise Trerotola (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Saviour) overcame dropping the first set of her singles match to improve to 4-0 overall, but the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's tennis team suffered their first loss of the season falling 6-3 to the College of Staten Island in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon.

How it Happened

Trerotola and Valentina Velez Valencia (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) improved to 2-0 at No. 1 doubles with an 8-5 victory over Katherine Villarroel and Mariah DeGuia, but Staten Island (1-0) captured the other pairs matches for a 2-1 lead.

In singles play, the Dolphins dropped just two games in taking the No. 3, No. 4, and No. 5 singles matches to clinch the overall match. Velez Valencia jumped out to a one-set lead and was up a break in the second set before she was forced to retire with an injury, (5-7, 0-2, ret).

Sophomore Mariela Picon collected her first collegiate singles win in the No. 6 position, 7-5, 6-0, to post the second point for the Bears.

In the top singles match, Trerotola dropped her opening set before taking the second to force a super-tiebreaker, where she prevailed in the closely-contested race to 10, winning the final two points to seal the comeback, 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (8).
