Picon Picks Up Lone Point as Women’s Tennis Battles Brooklyn College

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Sophomore Mariela Picon (Flushing, N.Y./Robert F. Wagner) gutted out a three-set victory at singles but the St Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's tennis team (1-3) faltered in their non-conference matchup with borough rivals Brooklyn College (5-1) at the Roosevelt Tennis Courts on Monday afternoon, losing 8-1.

Playing at No. 5 singles, Picon's got off to a quick start, winning set one, 6-2. Her opponent, Bulldog Natalie Abramov, came back to win set two of the match, 6-4. With all matches already complete, the sophomore rookie prevailed in a super-tiebreaker, 10-8, for her second win of the season.

The Bears nearly earned a point in the opening doubles session, as Jennifer Garcia (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Devyn Stansky (Breezy Point, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) were edged out in a tiebreaker at No. 3 pairs, 8-7 (3).

Next Up for the Bears

With just a one-day break, the Bears return to Skyline Conference play hosting Purchase State (2-1, 0-0 Skyline) on Wednesday (9/26). First serve is at 7 p.m. at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
