STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's tennis team (2-2) overcame a 0-3 deficit to defeat the College of Staten Island (0-2), 6-3, in a non-conference match on Saturday afternoon.

CSI was spotted a 3-0 advantage as SJC defaulted one doubles and two singles matches from the outset, but the Bears swept all six played matches for the first win over the Division II provisional Dolphins since 2009.

Freshman Raquel Ramirez (Woodhaven, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) and senior Valentina Velez Valencia (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) teamed up at No. 2 doubles for a 6-4 win to post the first point for SJC and was followed by senior Daniella Alva (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) and junior Katie Estes (Richmond, Vt./Mt. Mansfield Union)  who prevailed 6-3 in the top pairs match.

Ramirez collected a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles to tie the match at 3-all, Velez Valencia notched a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles to put the Bears ahead and Alva clinched the victory with a 6-4, 6-4 triumph in the No. 2 spot.

In the lead singles match, Estes outlasted Hannah Bruschi in a third-set super-tiebreaker, 7-5, 0-6, 1-0 (10-8), to record her first collegiate singles victory.

The Bears have a week off before heading to New Haven, Connecticut for a non-conference match with Albertus Magnus College on Saturday, September 21 starting at 3 p.m.
