Women’s Tennis Drops Close Match at Purchase

PURCHASE, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's tennis team (2-5, 0-3 Skyline) pushed the preseason favorite Purchase College (2-5, 2-1 Skyline) to the limit, but ultimately fell to the Panthers, 6-3, in Skyline Conference action on Saturday.

How It Happened

The Bears dropped the first doubles matchup but fired back with two straight doubles wins, including an 8-6 win for Raquel Ramirez (Woodhaven, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) and Jennifer Garcia (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) to establish a 2-1 lead going into singles play.

The Panthers took three straight singles wins to regain the lead before Ramirez took her 3rd singles win of the season in the No. 6 spot, bringing the overall score to 4-3 in favor of Purchase.

The final two singles matches to finish both went a super tiebreaker third set, with the Bears needing both matches to clinch the overall win.

Ashleigh Hartwig (Santee, Calif./West Hills) dropped the first set of her singles match but battled back to win the second set 7-5. Hartwig couldn't win over the tiebreaker, losing 10-6. Daniella Alva (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) also dropped her first set but rallied to take the second set, 6-2. Alva would lose the tiebreaker, 10-8.

Next Up for the Bears

The Bears gear up to host FDU-Florham (2-0) on Friday, October 4th for a non-conference matchup. First serve at the USTA National Tennis Center is set for 12 p.m.
