Lady Bears Drop Lightning in 4 Sets

The Lady Bears defeated Lehman College 3-1 on Monday night at the new home of the Lady Bears, Brooklyn Technical High School. With the win, the Lady Bears impove to an overall record of 8-4 (3-0 HVWAC) and extend their winning streak to 4. The loss drops Lehman College to an overall record of 7-5.

Despite having a close, nail-biting start in the first set, the Lady Bears lost the set to the strong Lightning defense, 21-25. However with the constant unyielding support from the Lady Bears bench and the alumni & family in the crowd, St. Joseph's managed demonstrate their offensive prowess, winning the next two sets with seeming effortlessness, 25-11 and 25-12, respectively. They rallied behind the service of seniors Tamara Bulatovic (Queens, NY / Grover Cleveland) and Jaime Mascetti (Queens, NY / St. John's Prep) who accounted for 45% of the points in the two sets

In the final set, Lehman College created quite the challenge for the Lady Bears, remaining withing a point away from turning the tide of the game and sending the match to a deciding fifth set, but the Lady Bears remained steadfast. With the Lady Bears leading the set 22-20, senior Bala Huseinovic(Brooklyn, NY / New Utrecht) held serve for the remaining 3 points, including an ace, to secure the set 25-20 and the win for St. Joseph's.

St. Joseph's was led offensively by Tamara Bulatovic (16 kills, .419 pct.) and Jamie Mascetti (37 assists) and defensively by freshman libero Victoria Curran (14 digs) and Bala Huseinovic (10 digs). The Lightning were led by Gerri-Ann Martin (16 kills, 14 digs), Dilma Marte (16 digs) and Lisa Jagdeo (23 assists).

The Lady Bears are on the road this Wednesday in a non-conference match against Brooklyn foe New York City Technical College at 6:00 PM.
