Women's Volleyball Falls To York

BROOKLYN, NY – Kathleen McCarthy had 12 kills and 10 digs in a losing effort where the St. Joseph's College women's volleyball team lost in straight sets (27-25, 25-17, 28-26) to York College (5-11) on Wednesday night at Brooklyn Technical High School.

In the opening frame that saw 15 ties and 11 lead changes, Victoria Curran (Queens, NY/Mary Louis) served four straight aces to stave off three set points and gave the St. Joseph's a chance to steal the opening set.  However the Lady Bears couldn't covert and the Lady Cardinals won the next three points to take back the opening set 27-25.

A deflated St. Joseph's fell behind early in the second set and never drew even, dropping the set 25-17.  The Lady Bears fought back in the third frame fighting off two set points again and reaching their own set point, but York won the final three points end the match.

McCarthy's double-double was the first of her career and the second by a Lady Bear this season.  Curran led the defense with 17 digs, her highest total this season and tied a match-high five aces.  Melissa Simo (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood) had 15 assists.  Yliane Ulloa (Queens, NY/Midwood), the Lady Bears' leading hitting, did not play hampered by a leg injury.

Two Lady Cardinals finished with double digit kills, led by Irma Ruilova with 13 kills.

St. Joseph's falls to 3-5 on the season with their third straight loss.  The Lady Bears face Lehman College (3-5) in a non-conference matchup tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m.
