GaNun, Matthews and Rios Selected to HVWAC All-Conference Volleyball Team
BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Freshman Lauren GaNun (Breezy Point, NY/Fontbonne Hall), senior Kim Matthews (Breezy Point, NY/Bishop Kearney) and sophomore Nicole Rios (Astoria, NY/Mary Louis) were named to the 2012 Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference (HVWAC) All-Conference Team as announced at the conference championships on Sunday.
The trio led the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's volleyball team to a 14-7 mark and perfect 6-0 record in league play, the Lady Bears capturing their first regular season championship in five years.
GaNun and Matthews add to their Association of Division III Independents (AD3I) First-Team All-Independent honors announced last week.
GaNun was also named AD3I Rookie of the Year and leading the Lady Bears in kills (213), hitting percentage (.275), blocks (39.0) and points (262). The freshman middle blocker posted 11 games with double-digit kills including one double-double. GaNun was a two-time HVWAC Player of the Week and two-twim HVWAC Rookie of the Week.
Matthews is selected to the HVWAC All-Conference Team for the third straight year. The Lady Bears' top all-around player during her three-year career, the senior outside hitter recorded a team-high 10 double-doubles this season and finished her career with 685 kills posting a .134 hitting percentage, with 209 assists, 162 aces, and 842 digs.
Rios receives all-conference honors for the first time in her career. The sophomore outside hitter appeared in all 21 matches and finished second on the team with 282 digs. Rios recorded 91 kills and 28 service aces.
