Women's Volleyball Drops Both Ends of Tri-Match

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's volleyball team dropped both ends of a tri-match on Saturday at Brooklyn Technical High School falling in straight sets to Merchant Marine, 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-17) and succumbing to Mount Saint Vincent, 3-2 (25-15, 20-25, 18-25, 25-16, 15-11).

Merchant Marine defeated Mount Saint Vincent, 3-1 (25-18, 22-25, 25-9, 25-15) in the second match of the day and improves to 8-2 on the season. Mount Saint Vincent picked up their first win of the season, moving to 1-10 and St. Joseph's fell to 1-3 on the year.

In the opening match, the Lady Bears came out strong building an early 8-2 lead in the opening set off the serve of junior Jennifer Moncino (Ridgewood, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy). However, the Mariners fought right back and scored 10 of the next 11 points to take a 12-9 lead forcing a St. Joseph's timeout. The Lady Bears got as close as 17-16 but would not be able to break through and take the lead.

The second stanza was a repeat of the first as St. Joseph's took an early lead but Merchant Marine stormed back and took the set finishing on an 18-10 run after the score was tied at 7-7.

The Mariners took the third set easily as they led from start to finish to finish off the match.

The Lady Bears were led by sophomore Lauren GaNun (Breezy Point, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall) who had a match-high 12 kills while recording eight digs. Senior Sabrina Cornia (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller) helped direct the offense with her 15 assists.

Merchant Marine was led by Jordy Macbeth who slammed down 11 kills.

In the second match of the day, Mount Saint Vincent took the opening set rather handily and it looked like the match may be a quick one but St. Joseph's had other plans as they fought back and played well in the second set taking a 17-15 lead and scoring five unanswered helped by five kills from GaNun to build a 22-15 advantage that proved insurmountable.

The third set saw the Dolphins jump out to the early lead this time building an 8-4 lead but after the score was tied at 12-12 the Lady Bears would go on a 10-4 run to build a 22-16 advantage that proved too much for Mount Saint Vincent to overcome.

The fourth stanza saw the Dolphins dominate as they led from start to finish without the St. Joseph's ever really threatening.

The finale saw the action going back and forth with the teams trading points until Mount Saint Vincent closed the set and match on a 4-0 spurt after the score was tied at 11-11 to earn the victory.

St. Joseph's was led by GaNun who recorded her first double-double of the season putting down 15 kills while bringing up 12 digs. Moncino helped the Lady Bears cause with her career-high eight kills. Junior Megan Moran (Syosset, N.Y./St. Dominic's) fell two kills short of a double-double finishing with eight kills and 12 digs. Cornia helped orchestrate the offense dishing out 31 assists while contributing a career-high 20 digs.

Mount Saint Vincent was led by Maria Leineweber who also recorded a double-double finishing with a match-high 18 kills while recording 16 digs.
