Women's Volleyball Splits at King's (Pa.) Tri-Match

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's volleyball team split a weekend tri-match falling to King's College (Pa.), 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-16) before triumphing over Medgar Evers College, 3-0 (25-6, 25-12, 25-7) on Saturday afternoon at Scandlon Gymnasium.

King's (Pa.) defeated Medgar Evers, 3-0 in the final match of the day and improves to 9-5 on the season. St. Joseph's remains at .500 with their 4-4 mark while Medgar Evers drops to 1-11.

In the opening match, King's (Pa.) took the first set rather easily before the Lady Bears played the Monarchs tight losing the second set on a tiebreaker. St. Joseph's would not recover from the tough loss in the second set and King's (Pa.) took the third set without a real threat from the Lady Bears to seal the match.

The Lady Bears were led by sophomore Lauren GaNun (Breezy Point, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall) who had a team-high 11 kills and had an impressive .333 hitting percentage. Sophomore Anna Carbone (Ozone Park, N.Y./Mary Louis) helped lead the St. Joseph's defense with her career-high-tying 28 digs. Junior Chanell Joseph (Bronx, N.Y./St. Jean Baptiste) contributed a career-high 14 digs.

Pacing the Monarchs offense was Kelsie Kramer and Jessica Carr who each recorded double-digit kills.

The second match saw the Lady Bears dominate the Cougars from the beginning to the end. St. Joseph's was efficient on the offensive end finishing with a .305 hitting percentage.

GaNun helped lead the Lady Bears charge with her match-high 13 kills and .524 hitting percentage while senior Megan Moran (Syosset, N.Y./St. Dominic's) slammed down six kills. Senior Phia Martinez (Astoria, N.Y./St. John's Prep) added a career-high seven digs in the win.

Medger Evers was led by Beatrice Bonhomme who put down a team-high three kills.

The Lady Bears return to New York as they travel to John Jay College on Tuesday, October 1st with first serve set for 7 p.m.
