Summer Spotlight: Jennifer Moncino, Women's Volleyball and Swimming

Summer Spotlight: Jennifer Moncino, Women's Volleyball and Swimming

Jennifer Moncino comes off one of her best seasons for the women's volleyball team with a solid all-around effort serving up a team-best 51 aces, slamming a team-third-best 91 kills, bringing up a team-second-best 262 digs, all career season bests. For her efforts which helped lead the Lady Bears to the regular season title and tournament runner-up, Moncino was named to the AD3I All-Independent Second Team and the HVIAC All-Conference Team, the first time she's received either honor.

This past winter, Moncino jumped in the pool for her first season on the women's swimming team and appeared in five meets competing primarily in the 50 yard freestyle, 100 yard freestyle and 200 yard freestyle relay.

In addition to her accomplishments on the court and in the pool, Moncino was also named to the USCAA and HVIAC All-Academic Teams this past season.

About you

I came to St. Joseph's because…

I want to be a teacher and this is the best teaching program.

Your major…

Double Major: Child Study and Speech Pathology

Career goals after graduation…

Get a teaching job my first year out while getting my masters in special education and getting certified in ABA.

My dream job is…

Open my own day care for people with special needs.

Summer plans…

My summers are really sporadic.  I babysit for about ten different families.  I also volunteer upstate at camps for people with special needs, which is my favorite part of summer.  Miami and Lake George were my vacations for this year.   And finally, my least favorite part, working out my knee getting ready for the season to try and not re-tear my ACL!

A unique/interesting talent of mine…

I have a total of ZERO interesting talents.

On being a Lady Bear...

Best moment in a Bears uniform…

For my first two years on this team we lost in the playoffs to the same team, Culinary Institute of America (yes they cook and yes they are good at volleyball and yes we lost to a bunch of chefs).  Last year, my third year, we came back with a vengeance when we met them.  We beat them and ended up being undefeated in the regular season.  Winning this game was absolutely the best feeling I've had on this team after working so hard with my Lady Bears.

Funniest moment in practice/pre-game with Coach…

Practices with the volleyball team are an absurd thing.  We are constantly laughing and enduring punishments for fooling around.  The funniest moment to me was when we were running suicides the day before playoffs because we were in trouble and Anna and I sprinted full speed into each other and both flew to the floor and stayed there for about three minutes.

Practices with the swim team were just as ridiculous considering Lane 4 is not as skilled as we would like to be.  The funniest moment on this team is when Jackie Collins put Lane 4 in the medley relay and we all swam a stroke we have never done before.  But it's okay, because we didn't get DQed!

Pre-game rituals or superstitions…

The volleyball team has about eight rituals which we do before each game and they are all obnoxious.  We sing a bunch of songs to get us pumped up and ultimately really tired right before hitting the court.

My pump up song before a game is…

It definitely changes each season.  Last season it was We Can't Stop by Miley Cyrus.

Favorite road trip so far…

My favorite road trip was going to Canton with the volleyball team.  We were stuck on the bus for about ten hours and I have never experienced a group of more delirious girls.

My goal(s) for next season is/are to…

It is my last season because I am a Senior, therefore, WE NEED TO TAKE THE CHAMPIONSHIP.

On being social media famous…

Twitter or Facebook?

Definitely twitter considering I always have something to say and I can say it all on there!

Number of…

Twitter followers: 456 (@jmoncino)
Facebook friends: 1,815
Instagram followers: 748

The most likes you've received on an Instagram photo and what was the photo of?

True or false? I overuse hashtags.

False, I use just the right amount…

Your favorites…

Favorite sports team(s)…

Mets, Rangers, and Jets… Only because those are my dad's favorites.

Favorite TV show…

GIRLS because Lena Dunham is an angel.

Favorite SJC Professor...

Susan Straut-Collard aka smartest person alive.

Favorite SJC Staff member…

Cannot answer this without creating enemies…

Favorite quote/motto…

Really, really cliché, but I'm a huge believer in "Everything happens for a reason."

Final thoughts…

Anything you'd like to share with all the fans out there …

The Bears are like one big family and we're blessed to be a part of it.
