Women's Volleyball Cruises in Sweep of Old Westbury

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – Led by a match-high 15 kills from Lauren GaNun (Breezy Point, N.Y.), the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's volleyball captured a straight-set (25-17, 25-13, 25-15) over SUNY College at Old Westbury on Thursday evening at the Clark Athletic Center.

The Lady Bears (2-1) snap a three-match skid to future Skyline Conference foe Panthers (0-5) in the first meeting between the squads since 2011.

GaNun committed only one attack error on 24 swings for a blistering .583 attack percentage. Anna Carbone (Ozone Park, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) anchored the defense with 12 digs and also put away six kills for the Lady Bears who had 27 kills for the match. Samantha Cacace (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) dished out 19 assists and served up three aces.

Fareeda Roushdy paced the Panthers with six kills while Ruth Vargas added five kills.

St. Joseph's remained in control the entire way through, trailing only once after the match's opening point. The Lady Bears pulled away from the hosts early in each set and never allowed them to close the gap.

St. Joseph's continues their five-match road stand to open the season, traveling to U.S. Merchant Marine Academy for a non-conference match on Wednesday, September 17 starting at 7 p.m.
