Women's Volleyball Downed by Pratt in Straight Sets

BROOKLYN, N.Y.—In a matchup between two Clinton Hill rivals, Pratt Institute received 19 kills from Alice Vicente to push past the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's volleyball team in straight sets, 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-17), in Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic play on Tuesday night at Brooklyn Technical High School.

The two-loss Cannoneers (12-2, 4-1 HVIAC) finished league play and solidified their No. 2 seed for the upcoming tournament, while the Lady Bears (4-9, 0-3 HVIAC) will need to win their remaining conference games versus Culinary and Yeshiva to clinch the fourth and final playoff spot.

Junior Lauren GaNun (Breezy Point, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall) led the St. Joseph's attack with 14 kills, committing just two errors for a .255 hitting percentage and fell one dig shy of a double-double. Senior Jennifer Moncino (Ridgewood, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) brought up a match-high 20 digs and added five kills. Junior Anna Carbone (Ozone Park, N.Y./Mary Louis) dished out 15 assists and contributed four aces and three kills.

Vicente, a four-time HVIAC Player of the Week, paced Pratt with a 19-kill, 16-dig double-double, hitting a blistering .548 on the night. Ali Houghton directed the Cannoneer attack that hit .352 for the match with 39 assists.

With the match tied 10-10 in the opening set, Vicente's heavy service helped a 5-0 run, and the Lady Bears were never able to close the gap. In the second stanza, the teams remained tied at the 15-15 mark, before Pratt pulled away with a mini spurt.

Carbone served up three of her four aces early in the final frame, helping St. Joseph's pull out to a 10-7 lead, but Pratt scored nine unanswered and dashed the Lady Bears' hopes of forcing a fourth set.

The victory was the first for the Willoughby Avenue rivals in seven meetings.

St. Joseph's continues a six-game home stand hosting John Jay College on Thursday, October 9th at Brooklyn Technical High School with first serve slated for 7:30 p.m.
