Women's Volleyball Takes Care of York in Straight Sets

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's volleyball team took advantage of their opponent's mishaps as they defeated York (N.Y.) in straight sets, 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-21) on Thursday night at Brooklyn Technical High School.

Junior Lauren GaNun (Breezy Point, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall) led the way for the Lady Bears (5-10) with her fourth 20-kill match of the season slamming 21 of them. This week's HVIAC Player of the Week committed only two errors for a stellar .475 hitting percentage and added six digs.

Anna Carbone (Ozone Park, N.Y./Mary Louis) dished 21 assists and was a dig away from a double-double with nine in the win. Jennifer Moncino (Ridgewood, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) cracked double digits with a team-high 10 digs to go along with four kills.

NaaDira Patrick tallied a team-high 12 kills for the Cardinals (4-20) in a losing cause.

The first set saw the Lady Bears fall three points down midway through at 14-11. GaNun then notched four of her nine kills in the frame and Chanell Joseph (Bronx, N.Y./St. Jean Baptiste) put across two service aces to end the set on a 14-5 run.

In the second stanza, both teams went back-and-forth trading the lead eight times. With York up 13-12, the Lady Bears charged ahead with a 12-6 run that included four more GaNun kills.

The Cardinals jumped out to a quick 4-0 advantage in the third set and would lead all the way to 17-16. St. Joseph's would push to even the score at 21. Following two York errors and GaNun's final two kills, the Lady Bears wrapped up their fifth win of the season.

The Lady Bears will look to build momentum following this game as they take on Culinary in HVIAC play Saturday night at Brooklyn Tech High School, the first of two Breast Cancer Awareness games. First serve is at 7:00 PM.
