Women's Volleyball Concludes Season With Loss in HVIAC Semis to New Rochelle

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y.—In a rematch of last year's Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (HVIAC) title game, the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's volleyball team was defeated by The College of New Rochelle, 3-0 (25-10, 25-14, 25-12), in the HVIAC Tournament semifinals on Sunday afternoon at the Wellness Center.

The Blue Angels (24-7, 5-0 HVIAC) controlled each set with Meghan King and Fabiola Padilla Rios leading the offensive charge, piling up 15 and 11 kills, respectively. Indigo Flowers and Melanie Lopez Soto orchestrated New Rochelle's offensive success by contributing 16 assists apiece. Soto also added eleven digs and a game-high six service aces.

Junior Lauren GaNun (Breezy Point, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall) led St. Joseph's (8-12, 2-3 HVIAC) with five kills and two service aces. Anna Carbone (Ozone Park, N.Y./Mary Louis) contributed a team-leading seven assists and 13 digs leading four Lady Bears who reached double digits in digs.

In their final games, seniors Jennifer Moncino (Ridgewood, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) and Chanell Joseph (Bronx, N.Y./St. Jean Baptiste) contributed 12 digs each, Moncino also landing four kills.

After dropping the opening set that saw the hosts land 14 kills at a .250 percentage, the Lady Bears seemed to find some momentum, jumping out to a 3-0 lead and leading by as many as four, 11-7, before CNR rolled off 12 unanswered to take control of the set.

In the final set, the Blue Angels broke open a tie at 9-9 and ran away with the set using a 13-1 run, ending the Lady Bears' final game competing in the HVIAC—all the teams joining the Skyline Conference next season.

In presentations after the game, GaNun was named to the All-HVIAC Team, her third straight season receiving the honor.

Top-seeded New Rochelle went on to capture their second straight title, outlasting No. 2 Pratt Institute in a five-set marathon.
