Women's Volleyball Opens Skyline Conference Play With 3-1 Loss to Mount Saint Mary

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. — Senior Lauren GaNun (Breezy Point, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall) slammed 12 kills and had three blocks but the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to Mount Saint Mary College in in both team's Skyline Conference openers on Sunday morning.

How It Happened

  • The Knights captured the opening set behind seven kills from Rachel Sabatini.
  • The Lady Bears stormed out to a 7-1 lead in set two and leveled the match with a 25-13 set victory with Lauren GaNun slamming five kills in the set as the Lady Bears hit .241 in the frame with nine kills against two errors.
  • But in a match that saw only one tie and one lead change, jumped out to early leads in the third and fourth sets and never trailed. The Lady Bears made a late run in set four to cut their deficit to 22-18, but couldn't force a deciding set.

For the Lady Bears

  • GaNun led the attack with 12 kills, hitting .170 for the match, and also added eight digs and three blocks to the defensive end.
  • Anna Carbone recorded her third double-double of the season with 17 assists and team-high 16 digs and added six kills.
  • Nina DiCioccio also contributed six kills with 13 digs
  • Samantha Rossi chipped in career-high 14 digs

For the Knights

  • Rachel Sabatini slammed a match-high 16 kills and Kayla Kurka had 13 kills, leading 10 different Knights recording a kill.
  • Kim Gries handed out 45 assists as the Knights combined for 50 kills.
  • Jen Gries anchored the defense with a match-high 38 digs.

The Bear Facts

  • Mount Saint Mary notches their first win in the all-time series and first meeting since 2007.
