GaNun Slams 27 Kills as Women's Volleyball Pushes Maritime to the Limit

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. -- Senior Lauren GaNun (Breezy Point, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall) pounded a match- and season-high 27 kills and Anna Carbone (South Ozone Park, N.Y./Mary Louis) posted her fifth double-double of the season and set a career high in kills, but the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's volleyball team was outlasted by Maritime College in a five-set Skyline Conference battle on Sunday afternoon.

How it Happened

  • Both squads exchanged sets over the first four frames with Maritime taking the first and third and St. Joseph's responding with victories in the second and fourth sets.
  • The Lady Bears offense got off to a slow start in the opening set before finding their rhythm in set two, combining to hit .409 over the next three frames, with 31 kills against just four attack errors.
  • With St. Joseph's trailing 2-1 in sets and falling behind 6-0 early in set four, GaNun slammed 10 kills on 14 swings with no errors in the frame to erase the deficit, and SJC closed out the set with a 10-2 burst that forced a fifth set.
  • In the deciding set, Maritime raced out to a 9-2 lead and led by as many as nine, 13-4, before the Lady Bears stormed back to run off eight straight points, three off Anna Carbone service aces, to pull within one, 13-12. But the Privateers would hold off the Lady Bears comeback bid winning the next two points to claim the win.

For the Lady Bears

  • Lauren GaNun registered her fourth double-double of the season with 27 kills and 12 digs.
  • Anna Carbone landed a career-high seven kills and dished out 20 assists with a match-high 22 digs.
  • The team had their most efficient hitting match of the season hitting .234 combining for 41 kills and matching a season-best 12 aces.

For the Privateers

  • Shannon Brady had slammed 17 kills and brought up 15 digs leading a balanced attack that saw four players finish with double-digit kills and three players record double-doubles.
