BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Freshman Tiffany Garcia-Lawson (Floral Park, N.Y./St. John's Prep) slammed a match-high 17 kills as the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's volleyball team downed SUNY College at Old Westbury at home on Wednesday night for their first Skyline Conference victory of the season.

How It Happened

  • Old Westbury opened the match on a 10-1 run on the back of two kills from Kristin Grieshaber. The Panthers' momentum wouldn't last, however, as SJC would use a 6-1 run of their own to bring their deficit to 21-17. Sophomore Briana Marrazzo (East Elmhurst, N.Y./St. John's Prep) recorded three kills, five digs and an ace in the frame, but the visitors took it 25-17.
  • The Bears would go on to own the second, as they only trailed on the first point. A 6-1 run in the middle of the stanza would push the SJC lead to 17-11 and they wouldn't look back from there. Garcia-Lawson powered the hosts, racking up six kills, two aces, and three digs en route to a 25-16 set triumph.
  • St. Joseph's would find themselves with a 14-7 halfway through the third, and they wouldn't relinquish it, taking the frame 25-18. Sophomore Paige Csikortos (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) served up eight assists to the pace the Bears, along with five kills from junior Nina DiCioccio (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep).
  • Looking to seal the deal, the Bears came out strong in the fourth, leading 11-3 early. Despite this, the Panthers didn't shy away, rolling to a 10-4 run to bring their deficit to just two, 15-13. SJC would hold steady, as they pushed the lead to 22-18. Two straight kills from DiCioccio, along with a Panther error, capped off their first Skyline win.

For the Bears

  • Garcia-Lawson led the attack, totaling 17 kills (on .316 hitting), six aces, seven digs, and 1.5 blocks on her way to a team-high 24.5 points.
  • Marrazzo notched her first double-double of 2017 with 10 kills and 14 digs, as well as four aces of her own.
  • DiCioccio was second on the squad in points with 18, coming on 13 kills, three aces, eight digs, and two blocks.
