Brooklyn College Downs Women’s Volleyball in Borough Battle

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Following back-to-back wins on Sunday, the St. Joseph College (Brooklyn) women's volleyball team ran into a roadblock, falling to a streaking to Brooklyn College (7-1) squad on Tuesday night in straight sets (25-16, 25-20, 25-17) in their final non-conference tune-up before opening Skyline play next week.

How It Happened

The Bulldogs—who extended their win streak to four—jumped out to a commanding 12-1 lead on their home floor. SJC managed a 9-8 edge in kills in the set, but nine miscues plagued them in the 25-16 first set loss.

The hosts got off to another quick start in the second stanza, opening on a 7-1 run before the Bears chipped away at the lead and pulled within two, 8-6, behind five kills and eight BC miscues. A kill from Cristina Morales (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) midway through the set shrank the deficit to one, 16-15, but the Bulldogs pulled away for good responding with a 7-1 spurt.

The squads jockeyed for the advantage in the third with four ties and five lead changes in the set, until the Bulldogs scored six unanswered to build a 16-9 lead. SJC pulled within three, 18-15, but could never fully close the gap.

  • Freshman Makayla Beehler (Rockaway Beach, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) recorded her third double-double of the season with 15 digs and a match-high 12 assists

  • Junior Valentina Urgo (Astoria, N.Y./St. John's Prep) and Morales led the attack with five kills each with Morales also bringing up a match-high 20 digs.

  • Freshman Kayla Ostermann (Glendale, N.Y./Queens Metropolitan) added four kills and eight digs.
