Women’s Volleyball Cruises Past Medgar Evers

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Following back-to-back losses, the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's volleyball team (3-6) took on borough-rival Medgar Evers College (1-12) on the road on Saturday and won in straight sets (15, 10, 10) after a loss in their Skyline opener.

How It Happened
Medgar Evers took a 4-3 lead in the first on a kill from Sashamoni Burnett, but St. Joseph's followed with a 10-1 run to take control of the set 13-5. Five unanswered Bear points, capped by back-to-back Valentina Urgo (Astoria, N.Y./St. John's Prep) kills, gave them a 19-8 advantage and they held on to win 25-15 despite a 4-0 spurt from the hosts.

Two-straight Briana Marrazzo (East Elmhurst, N.Y./St. John's Prep) points and a Medgar Evers error put SJC up 9-2 early in the second. A pair of Makayla Beehler (Rockaway Beach, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) aces extended the lead to 18-7 and Beehler assisted Kayla Ostermann (Glendale, N.Y./Queens Metropolitan) on the final point for a 25-10 finish.

Melisa Wright slammed a kill for a 5-3 Cougars' lead to open the third frame but a 15-1 stretch for SJC, led by two kills and four aces from Ostermann, gave them a commanding 18-6 lead and put the sweep within reach. The Bears concluded the match with five-straight points finished off by a kill from Nicole Leone (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) for their first victory since September 16.
