Women’s Volleyball Drops High-Scoring Match to Sarah Lawrence

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's volleyball team lost a hard-fought match to Sarah Lawrence College at The Hill Center on Thursday evening. The Gryphons took the contest in three sets, despite the Bears posting 19-plus points in each frame (21-25, 26-28, 19-25).

The Bears were hosting Dig Pink Night, an event supporting breast cancer awareness. Reflections on the cause were shared by Carol Melo (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) preceding the opening serve, and St. Joseph's wore pink jerseys in support.

How it Happened

St. Joseph's (5-5, 2-2 Skyline) tied the first set at 10-10 off a service ace courtesy of Melo. The Gryphons (8-8, 2-2 Skyline) responded by firing off a 9-3 run, giving them a comfortable 19-13 lead. The Bears climbed back, cutting the deficit to just one at 22-21, but Sarah Lawrence shut the door, collecting the frame's next three points and taking the first set 25-21.

The navy and grey strengthened their offensive attack in the opening points of the second frame, stringing together a 5-1 lead, a run capped off by a kill from Kaitlyn Intindola (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Bishop Kearney). The visitors fought back with a run of their own, collecting 10 of the next 12 points, providing them with an 11-7 advantage.

The Brooklyn squad later erased that deficit after going on a 9-2 run, giving them a 19-18 lead. After taking a timeout, the Gryphons scored three straight points, providing them with a 21-19 cushion. Following a timeout of their own, SJC cut the Gryphons lead to one, trailing 23-22.

The Gryphons were one point away from winning the set (24-23), but a kill by Cristina Morales (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) forced further play, as the Bears tied the set at 24-24. SJC faced set point two more times (24-25, 25-26) but leveled the score each time, until the Gryphons slipped away with the 28-26 set victory.

The Bears put together their largest lead of the night in the third set, in front 11-6. However, Sarah Lawrence eventually tied the score at 16 apiece and pulled away for the 25-19 dagger.

For the Bears

  • Morales led the offensive attack, bringing home six kills while collecting 16 digs.
  • Melo eclipsed her career-high in digs, picking up 24.
  • Valentina Urgo (Astoria, N.Y./St. John's Prep) tallied 19 digs and slammed home three kills.
  • Kaitlyn Intindola gathered 12 digs and distributed 11 assists.
