Intindola's Triple-Double Not Enough As Women's Volleyball Falls in Four to CCNY
BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University NY (Brooklyn) women's volleyball team pushed the City College of New York to four sets before ultimately suffering a 4-1 defeat (25-21, 25-22, 17-25, 25-21) on Thursday evening from The Hill Center.
The Bears were led by Kaitlyn Intindola's (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) triple-double of 22 assists, 12 digs, and 11 kills. Martina Urgo (Astoria, N.Y./St. John's Prep) also picked up a double-double behind a 15-dig, 11-kill effort.
How it Happened
An incredibly close opening set saw 15 ties and eight lead changes. Trailing 18-15, a trio of kills from Ayomide Adeoye (Brooklyn, N.Y./Edward R. Murrow) spurred a 6-1 run to lead 21-19. However, the Beavers scored the next six unanswered to take the frame, 25-21.
SJBK began the second stanza with a 6-3 edge thanks to Adeoye and Autumn Poppett (San Diego, Calif./Mission Hills) leading the attack. The visitors' 5-0 run swung the lead in their favor for the first time in the set. The advantage exchanged hands twice more before CCNY went up 10-9, failing to relinquish the lead for the rest of the set. The Bears would eat at the City College lead, coming within a point at 17-16 but the Beavers held on, 25-22.
The Bears dominated much of the third set. They came out of a 6-3 hole behind a 10-2 scoring run courtesy of a flurry of Beaver miscues. CCNY would claw back to trail by as little as two, 18-16 but a 7-1 run – fueled by aces from Jillian McGinty (Glendale, N.Y./Queens Metropolitan) and Rachel Meltsin (Brooklyn, N.Y./James Madison) and kills from Intindola and Teuta Hoxha (Kew Gardens, N.Y./Queens Metropolitan) – closed out the set in the navy and gray's favor, 25-17.
Six different Bears notched to start the fourth set, contributing to their 10-6 lead. The Beavers picked up nine of the next ten points to go ahead 15-11. The Bears would again cut their deficit to as little as one, 19-18, but CCNY took the set, 25-21, and the match, 3-1.
