Candelaria and Rushin Win Medgar Evers Dual; Women's Cross Country Tops Cougars

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Junior Kristen Candelaria (Jamaica, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) and senior Thomas Rushin (Ococee, Fla./Ococee) were the first runners to cross the finish line as the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's and women's cross country teams competed in a dual meet with Medgar Evers College on Wednesday afternoon at Prospect Park. The women defeated the Cougars by a score of 24-31 while the men fell to their borough foes, 24-36.

For the Lady Bears

  • Running in her first collegiate race, Candelaria covered the 2-mile course in 17:15 to win by a 1:03 margin.
  • Rebeca Ramirez (19:14), Katie Wenzler (20:18), Shannon Doherty (20:30) and Denise Trerotola (23:22) finished in 4th, 5th, 6th and 8th, respectively, to round out the scoring five and seal the victory for the Lady Bears

For the Bears

  • Thomas Rushin clocked in at 21:17 for the 3.3-mile course to win by 13 seconds over Williams Joyette for Medgar Evers.
  • Thomas Kennedy was the second Bear across the line in 4th place in 23:49.
  • Thomas Ambrosino (25:40), Carlos Mayorga (27:28) and Euclide Delacruz (31:39) rounded out the scoring five taking 7th, 11th, and 13th place.

Next Up for St. Joseph's

The Bears and Lady Bears will continue their 2015 campaign at the York College Invitational this Sunday, September 27 starting at 10 a.m. at Van Cortlandt Park.
