The Bear Facts

St. Joseph’s (Brooklyn) enters the final week of the regular season coming off a hard-fought four-game series against Mount Saint Mary last weekend where the Bears saw noteworthy performances from their pitching staff. Andrew Monda and Matt McHugh contributed strong starts on Saturday and Louis Lombardi and Joe Acampora posting career-highs in strikeouts on Sunday.

Saturday’s twin bill saw Andrew Monda go 5.1 in the front end, striking out three and giving up one run. Game two starter Matt McHugh gave up three runs on four hits while striking out five in seven innings. Both starters settled for no-decisions. With McHugh leading the way with 16 K’s on the season, all four pitchers mentioned, as well as C.J. Bunnicelli, have 11+ strikeouts.

Lombardi retired a career-high seven against the Knights while conceding a pair of earned runs; the most K’s by a Bear in a game since March 2019. After recording his first collegiate save the weekend prior, Acampora fanned five in 2.1 innings, allowing just one walk.

At the plate, Chris Leary went 1-for-4 in each of the final three games of the series, driving home three runs in the process. Thomas Airey slugged .750 on Saturday and scored a run, adding another on Sunday. Justin Biordi batted .429, going 3-for-7 and scoring a run against MSMC while Lombardi recorded three base knocks, an RBI, and a stolen base in the series.

A win against the Privateers would be the first since May 4, 2016, when the Bears edged their opposition, 3-2, from Reinhart Field in the first round of the Skyline Baseball Championship.

The baseball program will celebrate Senior Day on Sunday. The senior class of C.J. Bunnicelli, Darius Cadle, William DeLuca, Nicholas Hernandez, Kevin Reyes, and Matthew Rienzi will be honored in conjunction with the series and season finale.

Privateer Pulse

With a 4-2 conference record (6-5 overall) sitting in sixth place, the SUNY Maritime baseball program is vying for a top-four spot and a berth in the Skyline Baseball Championship. Prior to their two-game midweek series against Mount Saint Vincent being postponed due to inclement weather, the Privateers split their weekend series against Purchase.

A bases-clearing double by Austen Bishop followed by Ryan Rockhill’s triple headlined a three-run sixth inning to propel the Privateers to victory in the opening game of the series last Saturday. Bishop went 3-for-5 with a double, with two RBI and two runs scored; guiding Maritime to victory in Sunday's first game. Phil Russo also posted a pair of RBI and runs scored in the game while Freddy Forgione went 1-for-4 with a run scored and Travis Zurita homered. The Privateers was shut out by Purchase, 9-0,  to conclude the series.

Rockhill went 6-for-8 in the series and slugged 1.125. The junior catcher is fifth in the Skyline with a .524 batting average while his .545 on-base percentage and .714 slugging percentage are good for eighth and ninth in the conference, respectively. Going along with his 3-for-5 game on Sunday, Bishop went 6-for-12 over the four games with four RBI, three runs scored, a pair of doubles, and a .667 slugging percentage. His efforts earned him a nod on the conference Weekly Honor Roll.

On the bump, Niko Concha leads the ball club with a 1.93 ERA, in 14 innings pitched, to place seventh in the Skyline. He was given the start in Sunday’s win but settled for a no-decision. Ryan Ragone picked up the win on Saturday, striking out a pair in five innings while conceding a pair of runs on three hits.
