The Bear Facts

After a strong showing in Florida to open their season, St. Joseph’s College (Brooklyn) saw their 2020 season shortened after 12 games finishing their year at .500.

Ashleigh Hartwig is the reigning Skyline Player of the Year becoming the first rookie to win the award in 2019 thanks to a league-leading .468 batting average, .739 slugging percentage, 52 hits, 37 RBI, and four home runs. She showed no signs of slowing down last year posting a slash line of .500/.523/.875, with a team-leading 28 hits, 18 RBI, 12 runs scored, and a pair of homers in the abbreviated 2020.

In 2019, Jessica Mecham earned All-Skyline First Team honors posting a .519 slugging percentage and .508 on-base percentage that were good for second on the team and her .385 batting average placed her in third. In the circle, she posted a team-low 3.38 ERA over 60 innings. Mecham maintained a 2.12 ERA going 3-2 over six games last season.

Alexis Buchanan rounds out three 2019 All-Skyline returnees. As as rookie, she totaled top-five numbers on the team in batting average (.372), on-base percentage (.423), and RBI (19) while her 29 runs scored placed her second in the Skyline. Buchanan finished her 2020 campaign with a .405 average, 15 hits, and five RBI.

Nicole Trani and Sierra Bedrin return as sophomores looking to continue their strong rookie starts. Trani ranked second with 11 runs scored – behind Hartwig – to go along with 13 hits and seven RBI. Bedrin led SJC’s pitchers with 19 K’s in 17 innings pitched while notching 10 hits and eight RBI at the plate.

Rams Report

After their entire 2020 slate was scrapped before they could even take the field, Farmingdale State College will look begin the defense of their 2019 Skyline Conference softball title — their seventh title in team history.

FSC will see the return of a pair of 2019 All-Skyline First Teamers, Julianna Prescia and Priscilla Rivera, as well as Lexie Collard who earned a spot on the Second Team.

Prescia started 35 of the 36 games she appeared in. Her 34 hits, 50 total bases, three triples, and .510 slugging percentage led the team. The Salisbury University-transfer’s .347 batting average and .423 on-base percentage were both good for second. Rivera matched Prescia’s mark in triples while also leading the Rams with 28 runs scored, eight stolen bases and an on-base percentage of .441. To go with her conference First-Team honor, Rivera was one of two Rams to earn All-ECAC Honorable Mentions.

Collard, 2018 Skyline Rookie of the Year, featured on the All-Skyline Second Team following a 2019 campaign where she slugged at .357 and posted a .400 on-base percentage. In 98 at-bats, Collard logged 27 hits, scored 22 runs and drove in 11. She also picked up five doubles and a home run on the year.

The Rams also return 2017 Rookie of the Year and two-time Second Teamer Jessica Lombardo as well as 2018 First Teamer Amaris Negron.
