2017 Bears Scholar-Athlete Team Honored; 13 Teams Boast 3.0+ Fall GPAs
BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The second annual Bears Scholar-Athlete Team was honored on Wednesday at halftime of the men's basketball game, recognizing student-athletes who achieved over a 3.5 or better grade point average during either fall or spring semester of the 2017 calendar year.
In total, 82 student-athletes earned the distinction with many in attendance for the special ceremony and were congratulated by Director of Athletics and Recreation James Lally, Department of Criminal Justice Chairman and Faculty Athletics Representative Dr. Joseph Pascarella, Associate Dean for Student Success Matt Kubacki, and Director of the Academic Center Kris Percival.
"On behalf of the Department of Athletics and St. Joseph's College, I want to congratulate this group of outstanding student-athletes," commented Lally. "Our Bears continue to work hard on the fields and courts and in the classroom, and are a testament to what being a student-athlete is all about."
Of those honored, 30 earned over the 3.5 threshold in both spring and fall semesters. Collectively, SJC Brooklyn student-athletes achieved 21 perfect 4.0 semesters with SAAC vice president and men's basketball junior Sean Salomons (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's) holding a perfect grade point average for the second straight year.
Additionally, in the fall semester, 13 Bears teams compiled cumulative grade point averages above a 3.0 led by the women's tennis team's 3.497.
The athletic department would like to thank all the faculty and staff for supporting the student-athletes in their academic endeavors and congratulates the members of the 2017 Scholar-Athlete Team.
