Henson Awarded CoSIDA Undergraduate Scholarship
INDIANAPOLIS — Rising junior Kai Henson, a student intern in the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) athletic communications office, has been selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) as a recipient of one of three undergraduate scholarships for the 2019-20 academic year. The winners were formally announced earlier this week at the CoSIDA annual convention in Orlando, Florida.
A journalism and media studies major from Tiverton, Rhode Island, Henson has assisted Manager of Athletic Communications Anthony Macapugay since coming to Clinton Hill as a freshman. Working mostly as a volunteer, he's has been a key component in the promotion of the Bears teams and student-athletes assisting with gameday and post-game coverage.
"It is a real honor to be selected for this scholarship by professionals in the field I'm pursuing," said Henson. "It definitely helps and is a push to continue working and learn everything I can from Anthony over the next two years."
He has served as the statistician for the bulk of St. Joseph's home games over the past two years and is a freelance statistician in the New York City area covering gameday stats for 10-plus metropolitan area schools. Henson also writes many of the Bears' post-game recaps, was a graduate of the first-ever CoSIDA U Camp, and volunteered at the 2017 Big Ten Media Day at Madison Square Garden.
"Kai has proven himself to be promising future SID and this scholarship is well deserved,' commented Macapugay. "He is a quick learner and has demonstrated an outstanding work ethic and I am fortunate to have him working in our office helping to provide a first-class experience for the Bears student-athletes."
An active student member of CoSIDA, Henson is the first from St. Joseph's to receive the $5,000 scholarship. Joseph Haueter of the University of Mount Union and Gabriel Vegas Valente of the University of Nebraska join Henson as the 2019-20 scholarship recipients. Candidates must maintain a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average and express an interest in pursuing a career in sports information to be eligible for the scholarship which has been presented every year since 1999.
