Macapugay Elevated to Assistant Director of Athletics

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Director of Athletics and Recreation James Lally has announced the promotion of Anthony Macapugay to Assistant Director of Athletics for Communications and Operations, effective immediately.

One of the longest-tenured members of the athletic department, the Brooklyn native joined the Bears full time in 2008 as the department began the provisional process to become a full NCAA Division III member. However, Macapugay's involvement with SJC traces back as early as 2001 working Bears' basketball games as statistician and public address announcer, and later joined as part-time sports information coordinator in 2006.

"Anthony has been an extremely valuable member of this department for a long time and has served our student-athletes and programs proudly in his role as Manager of Athletic Communications," remarked Lally. "In addition to continuing to oversee our communications efforts, Anthony will be undertaking new tasks with this promotion and we are excited to see the impact he will have in this new capacity."

Over the past year, he already saw an increased role as sport administrator for the women's basketball and softball teams, providing oversight and guidance for each program to help ensure their continued success.

Macapugay is responsible for all the written, photographic, and video content for the department website, social media accounts, and print. Overseeing the Bears' brand and logo, he has played a large role in the updated design of team uniforms over the last two seasons and many of the branding efforts in The Hill Center.

As the recordkeeper and historian of SJC Brooklyn Athletics, Macapugay also served on the first two Bears Hall of Fame Committees.

He manages many of the aspects of home game administration for all sports. Many may recognize him as the "voice of the Bears" as public address announcer at home games, and the master of ceremonies at the annual awards banquet, which he also oversees the planning and execution of. 

Through his mentorship of interns and student workers, he has helped start the careers of several who currently hold head or assistant positions in sports information/athletic communications at all levels of the NCAA. Under his tutelage, student intern Kai Henson was recently selected as a recipient of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) undergraduate scholarship. 

Outside of St. Joseph's, Macapugay is a game night statistician for the Brooklyn Nets and is a statistician for numerous college tournaments and games at the Barclays Center, which included the 2017 and 2018 Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Basketball Tournaments, and also is a statistician for numerous local schools.
