Bobby Knapp ’88

Men's Basketball, 1985-88

Class of 2015

Nicknamed “The Wizard,” Bobby Knapp scored an astonishing 2,004 points in just three seasons in a Bears uniform (1985-1988) where he averaged a stunning 35.7 points per game. To put Knapp’s accomplishments in perspective, the current NCAA Division III career record is 32.8 points per game.

Knapp scored over 50 points in a game five times, highlighted by his single-game record of 59 points against Southern Vermont in 1988.

Former SJC basketball coach Dan Lynch recalls Knapp’s shooting prowess: “Rob was such a great offensive player, most teams had to double team him or play a box-and-one. Whenever a team started out playing him straight up, I would tell him, ‘Have fun, it’s Christmas morning.’ He was such a great player, usually the best player on the court, we knew we always had a chance to win.”

Knapp was selected to the all-tournament team in every tournament he played in, and was named MVP of the renowned “Kings of Kings” tournament in the late ’80s. After graduating in 1988, he played in various pro-am leagues in New York City and was invited to the European Pro League tryouts, eventually returning to sign with the Staten Island Stallions of the United States Basketball League.

Knapp continues to remain heavily involved in athletics, having served as the sports director for the Bronx YMCA and St. Claire’s Parish, and coaching ranked A.A.U. basketball teams in Florida where he currently resides. Knapp and his wife, Susanne, have six children: Robbie, 21; Blaize, 20; Victoria, 19; Autumn, 17; Shane, 14; and Jordon, 12.
