Mary Barry totaled an astonishing 1,895 points over her four-year career from 1999 to 2003, one of the highest scoring totals in program history and a mark that still hasn’t been surpassed. Barry scored an amazing 665 points during her record-shattering campaign in 2001-02, where she averaged 22.9 points per game and led the Lady Bears in assists (107) and steals (104).

“While I have had the good fortune to coach many talented young women here in my nearly two decades at St. Joe’s, there is no question that Mary remains the best of them all,” said athletic director and head women’s basketball coach Frank P. Carbone. “She was the ultimate teammate in that although she was the best player on the court and could score at will, Mary seemed to be genuinely more satisfied by dishing out an assist to an open teammate or getting a key defensive stop in a pivotal moment of a game.”

Barry recorded four straight seasons with over 100 points, 100 rebounds, 100 steals and 100 assists, the only Lady Bear ever to accomplish the feat. Led by Barry’s exploits, St. Joseph’s also captured their first-ever Hudson Valley Women’s Conference Championships, winning both the regular season and tournament titles in back-to-back years (2002 and 2003).

“Mary’s drive to win was insatiable, and she often saved her best performances for when we needed it the most,” Carbone said. “More significantly, Mary helped set the course for the Lady Bears to achieve the long-standing run of success that we have enjoyed for the past 12-plus years since she graduated. Mary is without a doubt a Hall-of-Famer in every sense of the word.”

A consensus USCAA All-American, Barry led the Lady Bears to their first USCAA National Championship appearance in 2001 and guided the squad to three tournament appearances beginning a run of six straight berths, which lasted through the 2005-06 campaign.
