  • The Bears began the season with three-straight double-digit losses, but saw improvement in their last four losing all but one by two runs or less. They dropped two-straight one-run contests during the six-game trip, beginning with the second game of the day against Marymount (Va.) (Mar. 10) as SJC fell 6-5 despite a big performance from Anthony Palermo (2-for-2, 3 R, 2B, HR, RBI). Then, in Sunday's first game against Mary Washington, they came up short 4-3 while Palermo drove in two runs.
  • Cabrini is 5-6 on the season and they most recently went 4-3 on their Spring Break trip to Florida, followed by a doubleheader split with Wells. In Florida the Cavaliers went 1-1 in twin-bills with Grove City, Augustana, and U. Pitt-Greensburg, while downing Saint Mary's (Minn.) in a one-off showdown. In back-to-back wins over Grove City and Saint Mary's (Minn.), first-baseman Dylan Butler combined to go 3-for-7 with a run and three RBI.

Keys to the Contest

  • Thus far the St. Joseph's offense has been led by Palermo (.273 BA, .500 SLG, 6 R), leadoff freshman Justus Acosta (.292 BA, 3 R, 2 SB), junior Adam Schwartz (team-high .318 BA, 3 R, 7 H), and infielder Michael Gonzalez (team-high 5 RBI, 5 H). SJC's pitching staff has shown promise and the ability to hold teams to limited scoring, as Daniel Egan leads the team in innings pitched (eight) and ERA (3.38), while junior J.J. McLaughlin fanned eight over five strong innings against Marymount (Va.) and boasts a 10.29 K/9 ratio.
  • The Cabrini lineup is well-rounded as it contains four players with at least six RBI and four with at least nine hits. Mack McKisson is the star, leading them with a .480 average, 12 hits, nine runs, six RBI, and a .720 SLG%. Butler (3 HR, .536 SLG) and John Lindeborn (5 R, 2 2B) have been the top run producers, entering play tied for the team lead in RBI (eight). Josh Breittholz has shined on the mound, sitting at 1-0 with a 1.17 ERA and .207 BAA in two starts.

  • The Beavers are currently 0-4 on the young season having been swept in doubleheaders by Hood (Feb. 24) and Shenandoah (Mar. 4). CCNY played Hood close, losing 4-0 and 3-1. However, ranked Shenandoah was too much winning two high-scoring matchups (9-6, 11-4). City College hasn't taken the field since March 4, as scheduled twin-bills against Yeshiva and Penn State-Abington were postponed and cancelled respectively. Before heading to Calvert Vaux, the Beavers host Maine-Presque Isle for their first conference doubleheader on Saturday (Mar. 17).

Keys to the Contest

  • Through four games CCNY has totaled just a .175 batting average, 18 hits, and a .295 on-base percentage. Although the struggles are evident, Sardar Khanbilvardi leads with a .333 BA and two RBI. The team lead in RBI belongs to Stephen Peters and Rob Mandich (three), and the Beaver lineup has connected on just two extra-base hits thus far. The pitching staff hasn't held up their end as well, totaling a 6.58 ERA in four games and just 15 strikeouts in 26 innings pitched.

History

  • The Bears are 9-6 all-time against City College and last met them in 2016 splitting a doubleheader.
