Ryan and Palermo Combine for Seven RBI as Baseball Holds Pine Manor to Two Runs in Sweep

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. — In their 2019 home opener on Saturday, the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) baseball team (4-1-1) swept Pine Manor College (0-4) in a doubleheader at the SJC Long Island Outdoor Field Complex.

Seven different Bears drove in a run and junior righty Vincent Juliano (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) tossed four shutout innings in a dominant, 14-0, game one victory.

Then, in game two, sophomore catcher Michael Ryan (Franklin Square, N.Y./Holy Trinity) posted three RBI and senior hurler Daniel Egan (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream Central) fanned seven Gators over four innings in a 4-2 triumph.

Matthew Trudden (Broad Channel, N.Y./Christ the King) scored on a throwing error in the bottom of the first for the game's opening run and Ryan drove in Palermo on a single to the left side later in the inning for an immediate 2-0 lead for the Bears after one.

Juliano induced a groundout to get out of a jam with runners on second and third in the top of the second and his offense rewarded him, piling on five runs in the bottom half highlighted by an RBI double from Palermo and a two-run single from Kevin Reyes (Bronx, N.Y./AECI) extending the edge to 7-0.

The third inning was more of the same as SJC put up four more tallies on the strength of a wild pitch, another Palermo RBI, a fielder's choice, and a run-scoring single up the middle from William DeLuca (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream Central).

This gave the Bears an 11-0 advantage that they wouldn't relinquish, adding three more in the fifth followed by three shutout innings and five strikeouts from rookie Louis Lombardi (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) for his first career save.

Two singles and a double steal had runners at second and third for the Gators with two outs in the top of the first when Jordan Fadke stepped up and notched an RBI single for the first run of the game. Pine Manor tacked on another run in the inning on a subsequent wild pitch for a 2-0 lead right away.

SJC answered in their first at-bats as senior shortstop Adam Schwartz (Staten Island, N.Y./Susan E. Wagner) led off with a triple, Trudden walked, and Palermo singled to left scoring Schwartz to cut the lead in half. Trudden and Palermo advanced on a groundout to first putting two runners in scoring position for Ryan who also singled past the shortstop plating two runs.

The Bears clung to a 3-2 advantage after one full and neither side mustered more than one hit in any of the final six innings with Pine Manor going scoreless and SJC adding an insurance run on two visitor errors in the fifth to secure the win and earn their first doubleheader sweep of the season.

For the Bears

• Palermo went 4-for-8 with three RBI, three runs, a double, and a stolen base on the day and Ryan was 3-for-6 totaling four RBI and a steal.
• Juliano recorded his first win of the season (1-0) striking out three over four shutout innings giving up just three hits and two walks.
• Egan earned the win in game two (1-0) allowing five hits, two runs, and a walk along with seven strikeouts and Andrew Watters (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) closed it out after him pitching three scoreless innings in relief (three K, one H, no runs) for the save.
• Schwartz put up a 2-for-7 line adding three runs, two steals, a triple, and an RBI while Trudden scored four runs on the day.
• Rookie outfielder Chris Zinser (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) was 1-for-3 in game one scoring two runs and stealing two bases.
