Baseball Loses Non-Conference Tilt to Gwynedd Mercy

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) baseball team (10-13-1) hosted Gwynedd Mercy University (10-11-2) in a single non-league contest at Calvert Vaux Park on Wednesday, falling 21-1 despite trailing just 1-0 after four innings.

How It Happened
Senior righty J.J. McLaughlin (Elmont, N.Y./Sewanhaka) limited the visitors in the early part of the game going three strong innings allowing just one run on two hits with a pair of strikeouts, but the Bears' offense couldn't get it going as they mustered just two hits over the first three frames.

SJC kept it close after four full, trailing just 1-0, but the Griffins erupted in their half of the fifth as Ryan Keen launched a three-run shot after two walks to open the inning and five more hits, two walks, two errors, and a balk led to 10 tallies for a commanding 11-1 lead halfway through.

Gwynedd Mercy added 10 more runs over the final three frames to put away an already lopsided game while the Bears got on the board in the bottom of the eighth when senior Anthony Palermo (Patchogue, N.Y./Sachem North) doubled home classmate Adam Schwartz (Staten Island, N.Y./Susan E. Wagner) to spoil the shutout.

For the Bears

  • Schwartz finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base.
  • Palermo had the Griffins number going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and SJC's lone RBI.
  • Joseph Langan (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) posted a career-high three hits (3-for-4) in the loss.
  • Matthew Rienzi (Maspeth, N.Y./Xavier) tossed a scoreless fourth inning to keep the Bears within one (one H, one BB, one K).
