Baseball Celebrates Senior Day Hosting Merchant Marine

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. — Riding a four-game win streak, the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) baseball team (15-19-1, 4-14 Skyline) hosted the United States Merchant Marine Academy (27-9, 14-4) in their final Skyline outing of the season as they celebrated Senior Day.

The Mariners swept the day winning 8-3 and 4-1 while SJC honored seniors Adam Schwartz (Staten Island, N.Y./Susan E. Wagner), Anthony Palermo (Patchogue, N.Y./Sachem North), Vincent Juliano (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville), Michael Gonzalez (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood), Daniel Egan (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream Central), and J.J. McLaughlin (Elmont, N.Y./Sewanhaka).

Game 1: USMMA 8, St. Joseph's 3

Both sides went down one-two-three in the first, but USMMA caught stride in the second as a pair of walks and a double set up a flurry of RBI giving them an early 3-0 edge. A sac fly pushed it 4-0 in third but the Bears answered, plating two in the bottom half RBI singles from Schwartz and sophomore Michael Ryan (Franklin Square, N.Y./Holy Trinity) to cut the deficit in half (4-2).

A run-scoring double in the fourth added to the visitors' lead and they tacked on three more on three hits in the seventh for a commanding 8-2 advantage. The Bears got out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth while they scored a run in their next at-bat after Palermo doubled and a couple of groundouts brought him home.

Joe Raab earned a convincing win on the mound for Merchant Marine, fanning 10 Bears over his six innings of work giving up just two runs in the 8-3 win for the second-place Mariners.

Game 2: USMMA 4, St. Joseph's 1

A walk and an error led to an RBI bunt and double as the Mariners opened the scoring in the second with a pair of tallies. The middle innings went scoreless until Jesse Reinebold belted a double to left center scoring Colin Baker in the fifth extending the lead to 3-0.

The Bears plated their only run of the game in the bottom of inning five as Schwartz picked up his second RBI of Senior Day to cut the gap to just two (3-1). However, a throwing error gave USMMA another score in the sixth and the three-run lead held despite SJC scattering eight hits across seven innings in the loss.

For the Bears

  • William DeLuca (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream Central) went 3-for-3 in game two (2 doubles) and drove in a run in the first contest. He also tossed six strong innings in the nightcap giving up three earned runs on six hits with six strikeouts.
  • Schwartz was 2-for-4 in the second game with an RBI in each outing while McLaughlin and Chris Zinser (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) singled and scored in game one.
  • Juliano, Egan, and Matthew Rienzi (Maspeth, N.Y./Xavier) all had scoreless relief appearances on Senior Day.
