PATCHOGUE, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) baseball team suffered a pair of defeats at the hands of Purchase College on Sunday afternoon. The opening game of the twin bill saw Mike Medina Jr. (Selden, N.Y./Newfield) and Abner Victor (San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic/John Adams) each go 2-for-3 with the latter scoring a run as the Bears (3-17, 1-9) were narrowly clipped by the Panthers (10-11, 6-4), 4-2.
Anthony Hernandez (Selden, N.Y./Selden) and Lucas Collet (Toulouse, France/Lyc'ee Bellevue) each drove in runs to give SJC a 3-1 midway through game two before the visitors pulled away late, taking the contest 10-4.
How it Happened, Game 1
Mike Santoriello (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) worked a pair of scoreless innings to begin the game but ran into trouble in the third as the Panthers plated three runs; headlined by an RBI single from Louis Carvell. He scored on an SJC throwing error later in the frame.
Trailing 4-0 in the fourth, a pair of wild pitches during Hernandez's at-bat saw Victor and Thomas Airey (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) score to cut the Bears' deficit in half.
Hernandez led off the seventh with a single to right, advancing to second on a wild pitch. However, the Bears went down in order, sealing the Panthers' 4-2 game-one win.
Game 2
Purchase jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first courtesy of an RBI single. Louis Lombardi (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) was put in a second-inning jam, loading the bases with one out. However, the senior got out of the inning unscathed as a double play ended the frame.
The Bears drew level in the fourth when Alex Goldberg (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach) scored on a throwing error by the Purchase third baseman. SJC added to their lead in the fifth as Justin Biordi (Howard Beach, N.Y./Scholars' Academy), who stole second and third, scored on Hernandez's single. Later in the stanza, Collet sent a double to right; brining Medina Jr. home and increasing the advantage to 3-1.
After a scoreless sixth, a Panther sac bunt brought in their second run of the contest before back-to-back RBI singles resulted in the visitors leading 4-3 after seven. A four-run eighth and a two-run ninth, sandwiched in between Zach Schnabel's (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) RBI single, confirmed Purchase's 10-4 result.
