Meiner Posts Second-Straight Double-Double but Sage Overwhelms Men’s Basketball

PURCHASE, N.Y. — In the consolation game of the A.J. Buchanan Classic on Saturday afternoon, the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's basketball team (0-2) came up short against The Sage Colleges (1-2) by a final score of 99-71.

Junior forward Kavan Meiner (Staten Island, N.Y./Susan Wagner) continued his hot play from the season opener, tallying a 15-point, 11-rebound double-double to lead the Bears in the loss.

How It Happened
It was a one-possession game for the first five minutes of play, but a jumper from Anthony Mitchell at 15:05 in the first sparked a 10-0 Sage run that gave them a 12-point lead. A Stephane Etheart (Hollis, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) tip-in brought the Bears within six (19-13) halfway through the period, but Sage immediately scored eight unanswered to establish a 14-point advantage.

The score remained one-sided as the Gators held St. Joseph's to a 27.5% mark from the field to maintain a 45-32 lead at the break.

Sebastien Etheart (Hollis, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) put up five points in the first minute of the second half to bring SJC back within single-digits (45-37). The Bears hung around until an 8-0 spurt from Sage, capped off by an Isaiah Scurry jump shot at 10:59, gave them a 16-point advantage (65-49) and essentially put the game away.

For the Bears

• Meiner's 15 points were the team-high and his 11 boards tied for the game high.
• St. Etheart totaled 13 points and five rebounds in his season debut while Se. Etheart put up eight assists, six rebounds, five points, and two steals.
• Frank Reali (Staten Island, N.Y./Susan Wagner) notched 11 points on top of five rebounds and a team-high four steals.
• Zach MacDonnell (Howard Beach, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) chipped in eight points and a steal off the bench.
